Simply Delicious…The only way to cook and WIN!

|By Elana| Free Stuff!, Home, To Eat

I call my on-screen chef, Zola-a, ZoZo or just Zola! Not only is she the most amazing chef everrrrr, but believe it or not;

Before I joined Expresso and cooked in the kitchen with Zola, I couldn’t show off ANY culinary skills. Really. Now that my food hero has launched her own cookbook..I had to be a show off and Interview her about her latest project! There’s also a chance for you to WIN!

Follow Zola on Twitter @zola_nene and on Facebook at /zolanenechef. Also, follow her publisher on Facebook and Twitter.

In Zola Nene’s own words, she says, ‘Food has always been a huge part of my life; important occasions were always marked with a feast of some sort…’ this book chronicles my food journey thus far – how it started and what has shaped me into the chef I am today.’ And that’s exactly what Simply Delicious is all about; it’s Zola’s culinary career told through her recipes, interspersed with snippets and perspectives of her life journey, including tributes to the people who have inspired and influenced her cooking style and explaining the reason for certain culinary choices that she has made.

If one had to describe Zola’s personality in a single idea, it would be ‘irrepressible joy’, which is the thread running through this journey as well as the state evoked by her delicious dishes. Her food philosophy is very simple – cooking is for everyone. With easy-to-follow instructions, the recipes will ensure that anyone can produce mouth-watering results.

Baby food recipe! and #BrotherMax #WIN

|By Elana| Free Stuff!, Home, To Eat

When my baby arrived on 19 March this year, I never thought that by now I would be introducing solids or even be writing about the simplest recipes ever!  I got advice from other moms, my amazing breastfeeding Clinic in Panorama, and then, my Little Esther Beth and I found our own way through it.  Her favourite is sweet potato.  It’s so easy to make.  Heres my recipe :)

Sweet Potato for my baby:

Wash the whole lot thoroughly.

Place in an oven dish. And in an oven preheated at 180 degrees.

Place in the oven and forget about it. Literally.  I find, the longer it’s in the oven, the naturally sweeter it becomes. Don’t add anything.  After 2 hours remove and forget about it again :)

Cut in half and scoop flesh out.  It should be soft like soft mash by now.

Place in a blender with a bit of cooled down boiled water.

Scoop into containers and freeze.  I use the Brother Max baby food containers. You can use anything.  Even freeze them as ice blocks and defrost them when needed.

To defrost, I place mine in the microwave as a ” 200g” serving.  They come out the write temperature and then we feast.

There 's never any Sweet Potato left!

Babymoon! Where to go #Aquila

|By Elana| Home, To Eat

Supplement your honeymoon and baby shower with a get away, and you have a Babymoon!  Of course it’s compulsory. So if you want to keep the stress levels low later in your pregnancy, tell your baby-daddy about this mandatory vacation for both of you, before the birth of your baby… now already.  Maybe a weekend, maybe a week. It does require the male end of conception to pay for all expenses out of his pocket …because we are pregnant, and being spoiled is so necessary.

Last weekend  we took a drive from Cape town to near Touws River. The same rd we used to drive  as kids to De Aar!  The only difference is, you turn left on to the R46 waaaay before that, like you are driving to Ceres, and there she is, Aquila private game reserve.

So under 2 hours away from Cape town you are surrounded by lions and  some of  the big 5 members.

I saw some day visitors, who opted for a safari on Horseback, quad bike…I played it safer and  at 8 and a half months preggers,  bounced onto one of the Safari vehicles.  Timothy was our experienced guide. And so our journey began.

Need some tips on BabyMooning ( don’t know if that’s a word…)…

But when?

I diarized my baby moon as soon as I knew the due date of our baby. Expert moms say book it in the 2nd trimester…I say, as long as you are near to a hospital, book it in the 3rd trimester. It’s fun thinking baby might come on holiday.  ( wink)

I have done a few game drives in SA, but have never seen  a lion up close, only in  sanctuaries.  I had to choose a place that a) I haven’t been to, b) Where I can’t go straight after baby’s arrival.  I choose Aquila Private Game reserve. Enough cellphone reception to call a DR. for an emergency  and far away enough from home to hear lions in the night and be greeted by Eland and Elephants at the waterhole in the morning from my Premier Cottage!  Also, you don’t have to take Malaria tablets.

You should visit this breathtakingly beautiful Karoo conservancy.   The staff are local (First Touws River, then Matjiesfontein are further on the N1) and extremely friendly.  I made friends with reception on Kitchen staff first.  I Was impressed that they had about 16,  2 point plugs available for these city slickers mobile chargers, and the staff assisting with dinner, cooked home made meals themselves.  Also, thank you for the Macon and beef sausages. Aquila. I don’t have pork, so that was a nice surprise at breakfast!

Well done to whoever thought of the idea to start a solar renewable energy project.  A solar power facility , that means all the daily energy requirements are covered by solar power!  Nice.

Also cooling off in the dust were a few Rhinos. The farm has a stunning project called – Saving private Rhino- see .  I saw several rhinos over the weekend.  I hope you spot them when you visit.

For now though I am waiting for baby to come.  The honeymoon, and babymoon is over.  I can still taste the food that Aunti Lindtas and Cathrine made…. I will be back soon, and instead of 2 we will be 3.
